If you’ve seen the film Once, you know how gorgeous both the storyline and the music in the film both are. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova have voices that meld together so well, it’s almost as if they are two sides of the same coin. The main love song from the film, “Falling Slowly,” was so lovely that it won an Oscar for the best song during the 80th Academy Awards. It was nominated for a Grammy as well, though it lost to the song “Love You I Do,” from Dreamgirls.
In the film, the scene set is a sweet one, during which the two perform the song together in a little music shop. That was cute enough, but the song itself is what makes it so wonderful. The notes are simple, the lyrics cleanly expressing an instant interest in another person—in other words, making a wonderful fist dance song. Sure, it’s been covered a few times since—most notably (and perhaps unfortunately) on American Idol—but nothing will ever compare to the actual performance by Hansard and Irglova.
People looking for a good, romantic folk song to play on their next anniversary or special occasion should definitely download “Falling Slowly.” It would surely add a little bit of magic to any special occasion.
